The Girls' Scholarship Program (GSP) serves as a college preparatory program that provides scholarships to girls in their first year of study at the University of Namibia. In order to help these young girls excel in their studies, GSP assists with the cost of meals, room and board, tutoring and other necessary items.

Like the general Namibia program, GSP works in cooperation with the University of Namibia Foundation (UNAMF). UNAMF is a charitable trust collaborating with the University of Namibia (UNAM) to encourage corporate and individual partnerships to further university growth and increase the educational opportunities for UNAM students. Our partnership is based on the shared belief in the importance of education and the desire to foster the potential of those with exceptional aptitude.

To be considered for a GSP scholarship, girls must have performed well in secondary school, need financial assistance and agree to mentor others young women in the community. To be eligible for assistance beyond the first year, the scholar recipient must maintain a high level of performance. We are looking for young women that are academically gifted and have a strong sense of community.

Barbara van der Westhuizen from UNAMF, who helps GSP carefully screen applicants, best described our criteria when she said, "we are also looking for specific personal traits... scholars whose ambition is to plough their knowledge and time back into the communities they come from in order to help successive generations of young girls achieve their dreams."

This program follows the scholars even after they have graduated with the goal that they will become mentors for other young women in Namibia.
